‘Shards‘ is a 2D platformer game I was involved in creating as part of the final thesis project for my MSc in Creative Digital Media (Digital Games). For this project Fabrizio Valerio Covone, Meghann Quinn & myself used Unity 3D to create a game about a troubled boy named Dylan who must go on a journey to save his brother, travelling through both the real world & a twisted version of reality created by his fractured mind.
During the project Fabrizio worked as the developer, project manager and lead level designer while Meghann was the lead artist. I occupied a middle ground, helping with game design, level design, storyboarding and as assistant artist.
First Meghann created the initial movement animation frames for Dylan. Upon testing these in Unity, I found we needed to add more frames to smooth out the animations. I also did some contrast / colour balancing to make Dylan stand out from the background. Below is the finished running animation strip.
After creating the character animations, we moved onto the levels. Below shows the development of the scenes / levels from initial sketch plan & art passes to the finished artwork. For each scene / level I was responsible for drawing up the initial environment concept sketch and then editing & colour balancing Meghann’s hand-drawn & painted artwork for importing to Unity.
The following are some sketches / plans I created for levels which were cut from the finished game due to time constraints.
The project was an excellent learning experience. I broadened my skill-set, boosted my confidence and made some great friends along the way & it definitely convinced me that making games is something I want to be involved in for a long time.
Below is the video trailer for the finished game project. It says coming soon at the end of the video, which unfortunately is pushing the definition of soon…
I’d love to do the game again from the ground up, but that may be several years away at best. I guy can live in hope though I guess!
